More World Cup Tibits March 29, 2006

Since I've managed to whet some of your appetite, I'll continue with some more features:
How well does a host nation fares?
1930 Uruguay – Champion
1934 Italy – Champion
1938 France – QF
1950 Brazil – 2nd
1954 Switzerland – QF
1958 Sweden – 2nd
1962 Chile – 3rd
1966 England – Champion
1970 Mexico – QF
1974 Germany – Champion
1978 Argentina – Champion
1982 Spain – 2nd round
1986 Mexico – QF
1990 Italy – 3rd
1994 USA – 2nd round
1998 France – Champion
2002 Korea/Japan – Korea 4th, Japan 2nd round
% of champions who are host nations: 33% (6 out of 18)
% of teams who made it to Quarter-Finals: 83% (15 out of 18)
Looking at the teams, it does seem that the home ground advantage will push Germany straight through to the Quarter-Finals. Whether the trophy remains in Germany is another question.
(I'll love to continue, but I've been playing on The Wicked…so no time until I get to level 40.

World Cup 2006: The 1st look March 26, 2006
Posted by kingmeng in Sports.5 comments
With the World Cup looming in 74 more days time, and with our sole legal betting source, Singapore Pools, revealing the odds at such an early stage, perhaps it’s time to take a good look at some past histories to build-up on the greatest sporting event in 2006.
1st, the current odds from Singapore Pools:

The New Paper had a great article on who should you place your money on, so go ahead and read it instead.
I know it’s extremely early to predict, but here’s my take on the Group Stage. Let’s go from the top, and analyze each group:
Group A: Nothing surprising in here. Germany is in an easy group, thus should make it way into the top spot. Poland takes the likely 2nd position, as Ecuador and Costa Rica isn’t much of a threat.
Prediction: Germany, Poland, Ecuador, Costa Rica
Group B: Yes, England should top the group, even though I predict they’ll end up the same points with Sweden. But with Wayne Rooney, they should be able to score more goals, thus getting a better goal difference compared to Sweden.
Paraguay and T&T will provide token resistance, but should just be a minor speed-bump.
Prediction: England, Sweden, Paraguay, Trinidad & Tobago
Group C: S&M should be pleased if they’re able to get 1 point from this tough group.
Dogba can boast all he wants. Ivory Coast won’t make it into the final 16.
Now comes the top 2: Netherlands will beat Argentina when they meet up. Their away form in the South American qualifiers ain’t great (3 wins, 2 draws, 4 losses), and considering that they’re in Europe rather than home ground, I don’t have high hopes of Argentina qualifying as Group Champions.
Prediction: Netherlands, Argentina, Ivory Coast, Serbia & Montenegro
Group D: Another straightforward group with no explanation needed. Iran should get more points than their debacle in Korea, (0 wins, 0 goals) with the help of Angola.
Prediction: Portugal, Mexico, Iran, Angola
Group E: Take Ghana out of the equation, and you have 3 teams in the world’s top 20 ranking. 2 main questions awaits Italy:
1) Will playmaker Totti recover in time, be 100% fit, and lead
2) Known to be slow-starters, will they burst out of their blocks this time round?
I’ll say no to both. But they’ll make it past USA, just barely though.
Prediction: Czech, Italy, USA, Ghana
Group F: The main question is who will be SECOND? If Singapore can lose only 1-2 to Japan, then they don’t deserve to go into the 2nd round.
Croatia fought off qualified as top 2nd placed team, but their qualifying group had Bulgaria, Iceland, MALTA…yes, they beat Argentina 3-2 in a friendly, but I’ll consider that as a one-off result.
So that leaves Australia, who fought their way through Uruguay, and a magician in the form of Guus Hiddink, who transformed South Korea into World Number 4 in 2002. That should give the Waltzing Matilda more chance to move into the 2nd round.
Prediction: Brazil, Australia, Croatia, Japan
Group G: Hello Togo, thanks for coming to World Cup.
France, despite their aging squad, should breeze past an easy group. That leaves the 2nd spot between semi-finalist in 2002 & a team which needs to beat Turkey in a violent play-off European game.
With experience in the last World Cup, and some of their star players plying their trade in Europe, I’ll give the slight edge to S.Korea.
Hey, I’m Asian. It’ll be nice to see an Asian representative in the 2nd round.
Prediction: France, South Korea, Switzerland, Togo
Group H: If Spain doesn’t top this group, they should just leave the competition right away.
For 2nd spot, let’s see…Tunisia top player is Francileudo dos Santos Silva, Saudi has Hamad Al Montashari, and Ukraine’s top player is Andrei Shevchenko.
I guess that simplify matters.
Prediction: Spain, Ukraine, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia
2nd Round
(Bold to win)
Germany – Sweden
Netherlands – Mexico
England – Poland
Portugal – Argentina
Czech – Australia
France – Ukraine
Brazil – Italy
Spain – South Korea
Germany should take care of Sweden with home support, while Netherlands cruise past Mexico.
England and Poland meet once again ala 2002, and the 3 Lions should come out tops again. The classy Argentina will meet up with Portugal, and the South Americans will teach Ronaldo & co. a lesson in stylish passing play.
Despite Gus Hiddink’s help, the Aussies should be heading back while facing the Czech, and France ends Ukraine’s debut in the World Cup in the 2nd round.
The mouthwatering clash between Brazil-Italy is the highlight for round 2, and it’s a pity that one of the giants would be out in such an early stage. The samba boys should nick it with individual brilliance. South Korea will not continue with their heroics from the last World Cup, as Spain should take revenge from what happened in 2002.
Quarter-Finals
(Bold to win)
Germany – Netherlands
England – Argentina
Czech – France
Brazil – Spain
The Orange Army shall prevail, as they sent the host nation out in the Quarters. Another 2002 matchup takes the form of England-Argentina. Unfortunately, I think England’s luck will run out in this stage yet again.
Czech will finally send Zidane into retirement for good, and without another chance of a international trophy, and Brazil should find themselves dealing with Spain much easier than with Italy.
Semi-Finals
(Bold to win)
Netherlands – Argentina
Czech – Brazil
Argentina rarely does well on European soil, and they should be proud to reach such an advanced stage in the Finals. Too bad they’ll meet with their legendary rivals, Holland.
As much as I would like the Czech to win the tournament, I can’t see a way for them to get past the Samba masters.
Finals
(Bold to win)
Netherlands – Brazil
It all boils down to individual talents. And in Brazil, there’s plenty of match-winners: Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Adriano, Robinho…the list is endless.
Of course, nothing is predictable in the World Cup. There’s bound to be upsets and such…but judging from the last 16 stages, there seemed to be a few teams that have it easier compared to others.
Hope you’ll be able to guess which teams they are. Good luck with the bets!

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished, as the once vital voice of the verisimilitude now venerates what they once vilified. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-à-vis an introduction, and so it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.
- Introduction by V
It seem as if March has become "Alternative Style Comic Book Movie Month" in the last few years. 2004 saw Hellboy, & 2005 was Sin City (I'm talking about the release times in USA, not Singapore, which was released in Oct). Now in 2006, we get Alan Moore's V For Vendetta, with the revolution brought to us in living color.
The Wachowski Brothers finally redeemed themselves after the disasterous Matrix trilogy (Reloaded & Revolutions are utterly bollocks). Here, they stayed true to the original source of material, with great casting (Hugo Weaving rocks!), this will definately be one of the top 10 movies in 2006.
There's been lots of controversies about whether or not this film is an
attack on the Bush administration. Remember, this book was written in the 80s, and
it was attacking Margaret Thatcher's administration, but the fact that
the question can be asked today means the central themes of the story
are still relevant.
Also, whether or not the creator of the story, Alan Moore, endorse it or not is irrelevant. You wanna know why he said the movie was inaccurate?
What Moore found most laughable however were the details. "They don't know what British people have for breakfast, they couldn't be bothered. 'Eggy in a basket' apparently. Now the US have 'eggs in a basket,' whish is fried bread with a fried egg in a hole in the middle.

BOLLOCKS!
Movie Rating: 5 out of 5.

On the other end of the spectrum, we get violence without meaning.
A famiy vacation takes a wrong turn, and they've ended up in the middle of nowhere. There may be others around, but it wasn't help they offered…
Ironically, my friends chose this movie as they did not want to watch "Running Scared", cos it was too violent. Weird, eh? If you're a HUGE fan of extreme violence, then this is the show for you to watch.
Unfortunately, I ain't.
Movie Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

I didn't have time to tidy my site today, (some should know why), but I'll make a simple poll for you guys to determine on my design.
For those who have seen my old site…should I continue with the "Eyes" links? It does have memories, and made my blog unique…but should I move on?
Please help me to make the choice…thanks!

Hope you guys will enjoy the stay!
Back in the army… March 22, 2006

Despite not meeting up with my Medical Officer during my army days for nearly 6 years, it's not exactly a good sign to know that he still recognise my face.

Dr. Ashraff, voted as one of the top 10 bachelors in the recent New Paper's V-day special, is one of the doctors at Eden Medical Aesthetics, where he specialize in cosmetic surgery.
Too bad he won't be able to help me to downgrade, such that I will never need to do any Reservist Duties again. Oh well…
My running has improved till 13 minutes for 2.4km, so my target of hitting below 12 minutes by August is still within reach.
Unfortunately, my pull-ups still fluctuates between 0 and 1.
I'm contemplating on applying for a gym membership. By paying up beforehand, it'll give me the motivation to go gym more often (CANNOT WASTE $$$!!!), regardless of the weather conditions.
But forking out $50++ per month does seemed a tad expensive for me…should I, or shouldn't I?
More S.League action March 20, 2006

Today's matchup featured Young Lions vs Balestier at Jalan Besar. It looked as though it was heading to a 0-0 draw, until Khairul Amri stepped up to score 2 wonderful goals.
It was a bore in the 1st half. Only 1 shot on target. Besides that, the only other excitement we had was when the referee blew for half-time
The pace of the game picked up after half-time. In fact, the game could have ended 5-0 in favor of the Young Lions, if not for Balestier's GK.
Khairul Amri’s brace was the deciding factor for the Young Lions to notch up their 1st win in the S.League in a 2-0 victory over Balestier Khalsa FC.
The match seemed destined to be a goalless draw, until a brilliantly struck volley from 30 yards by Khairul broke the deadlock in the 79th minute.
He doubled his goal tally 3 minutes later with a header from a corner kick to seal the 3 points for his team.

Dad’s ACTUAL Birthday March 19, 2006

Dad brought the family out for lunch to celebrate his birthday. (Yes, I know, we've celebrated on last Sunday & yesterday, but hey, who needs a reason to eat good food?)
The choice for today was Dim Sum at "It's Dim Sum" (一点心), located at Centre Stage in Marina Square.
As you can see, the place was formally a Japanese Restaurant. Instead of redesigning the place, they make use of the equipment left behind…& viola! Dim Sum bar!
Business was brisk, and the food was good. The usual dim sum stuff were ordered, though 1 caught our attention…
It's just Yam Paste, but the name for it was "Ugly Duckling". When the plate came…the ducklings look so cute!!!
Awwwww…..that was the last dish we ate. None of us wanted to eat the poor duckies…hahaha
Not for the Environmentalist March 18, 2006

Dad decided to take us out for dinner at one restaurant which main dish is considered a much-prized delicacy, yet caused much commotion to the wildlife conservationists: Shark's Fin Soup.
Tam Kah Shark's Fin Restaurant, located at Upper Cross Street, was the location which we've feast upon. I had bad memories of that place last year: the service, to put it mildly, was chaotic. They've completely forgotten our dishes, having to wait more than 45 minutes before it came, and having to see other diners who came in later than us finishing their meals earlier.
Today's meal came without problems. At least this came of some comfort on a boring Saturday (Woke up too late for a lunch appointment, movie outing cancelled, plans of swimming aborted due to hordes of children flooding the pool)
Hope tomorrow will be livelier…
