SuperBand May 31, 2006

I avoided almost all of Singapore’s reality shows (except Singapore Idol, which I caught occasionally), but yesterday, I caught a glimpse of SuperBand, and found it pretty interesting…
Instead of the run-of-the-mill generic pop singers, we get different genres of bands that are given a wider range in their selection of songs to sing to their strengths. I mean, how hard can it be to sing a “Top-of-the-Pop” song?
3 groups caught my attention:
1) Juz B

An all-Malay group, who memorized the Chinese lyrics using Han Yu Ping Ying.
Fa Ru Xue – Jay Chou
Jin Hua Lun – JJ
.
.
2) QI:NOBE

(Source from Mediacorp)
Influence by Nu-Metal/rap-rock, their performance has always brought the crowd to their feet. Their rapper is the only Chinese dude in the band.
Fang Shou Yi Bo – 5566
Huo Yuan Jia – Jay Chou
.
.
3) Mi Lu Ping

Nicknamed “Milo Peng”, their unique style in bringing comedy into their songs swings both ways: either you love it, or u destest them. For me, it’s the former…:)
Guo Huo – Zhang Xin Ze
Ni Kuai Le Shuo Yi Wo Kuai Le – Faye Wong
(Couldn’t find their last 2 performance, which I feel, were much better than these 2 clips which I found)
.

Not bad, eh? I guess it’s time for me to tune to my TV on every Monday at 8pm…
Updates on no updates May 28, 2006

Think “Burn-out” would be an appropriate word for the lack of updates.
Just need a little personal time, so it won’t be updated that soon.
Don’t worry, nothing’s happening…just that suddenly have no mood to write on anything (despite having plenty of materials)
.
(You know, everytime I blog about such an entry, the zest will be back pretty soon….let’s see how it’ll go this time?

Taking initiative & being overly-helpful at times could lead to greater disaster.
Can’t wait for Friday to chill…

Edit at 11.20pm: At least there’s always old retro Weird Al to cheer me up…:)

Over The Hedge May 21, 2006

Hehehe…

I rarely rate cartoons. Chicken Little was a disaster, while Ice Age 2 was meh. (I forgotten to write a review about it though).
But with RottenTomatoes giving it a high rating (73% at the moment), it does look interesting enough for me to catch this 87-mins cartoon (with a discounted GV ticket)
.
“Over the Hedge” is based on the daily comic strip by Michael Fry and T Lewis, and it stars Bruce Willis as the voice of RJ, a resourceful raccoon.
RJ accidentally destroyed the winter food stash for a hibernating black bear named Vincent (voiced by Nick Nolte). Vincent isn’t pleased, and he’s given RJ a week to replace all of the food.
Luckily, RJ stumbles onto a “family” of foraging forest animals, led by Verne (Garry Shandling), an overly cautious turtle. Verne and the others are disturbed by a mysterious hedge that appeared while they were hibernating.
As it turns out, the hedge divides their forest and a new planned community, which may provide the solution to RJ’s problems.
It may not be an animation classic, but it’s good enuff to leave audience of all ages with the laugh-out-loud moments. Steve Carell’s large-eyed, childlike squirrel, Hammy, is among the funniest, most lovable critters to ever scamper across a screen.

Rating: 4 out of 5 (Yes, it is better than The Da Vinci Code)
The Da Vinci Code May 20, 2006

Note: Read the words above carefully
The most highly anticipated & controversial book-to-movie has finally arrived on the big screen, and I managed to catch it last night.
Critics have been panning the movie (RottenTomatoes: 19%), noting that what makes Dan Brown’s novel a best seller is evidently not present in this dull and bloated movie adaptation of The Da Vinci Code.
Thus with a lower expectation, I watched the show with a clear, open mind….
…and I came out with slight disappointment.
.
Previously, I had wondered why all the hoo-ha from Xiaxue when she has complained about the poor adaptation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. At least now I understand why she would felt that way (but doesn’t mean I agree with her entirely).
From a perspective of the book’s fan, it’ll definately be a disappointment. Even if you give it 5 hours, Ron Howard may not be able to capture the complete essence of the book. Some scenes are altered, to make the movie looked much better, but the 1st half of the book was chopped up pretty badly.
From those who have yet to read the book, the movie is…..just another movie. It’ll be better to read the book, and find out what makes the book a best-seller till today.
.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5 (Nothing special.)
P.S: The above movie poster is a fake. ![]()
Retina Detachment May 18, 2006
Posted by kingmeng in Family Time.5 comments
A retinal detachment occurs when the retina’s sensory and pigment layers separate. Because it can cause devastating damage to the vision if left untreated, retinal detachment is considered an ocular emergency that requires immediate medical attention and surgery. It is a problem that occurs most frequently in the middle-aged and elderly.
Signs and Symptoms
· Light flashes
· “Wavy,” or “watery” vision
· Veil or curtain obstructing vision
· Shower of floaters that resemble spots, bugs, or spider webs
· Sudden decrease of visionTreatment
Pneumatic retinopexy is one type of procedure to reattach the retina. After numbing the eye with a local anesthesia, the surgeon injects a small gas bubble into the vitreous cavity. The bubble presses against the retina, flattening it against the back wall of the eye. Since the gas rises, this treatment is most effective for detachments located in the upper portion of the eye. In order to manipulate the bubble into the ideal location, the surgeon may ask the patient to keep his or her head in a specific position. The gas bubble slowly absorbs over the next 1-2 weeks. At that time, an additional procedure is usually performed to “tack down” the retina. This can be done either with cryotherapy, a procedure that uses nitrous oxide to freeze the retina, sealing it in place, or with laser. Local anesthesia is used for both procedures.
My mom went for this operation today, and she’s doing fine now. Staying in hospital overnight for observations.
I guess it’s time for my sister to step up, and do the washing, cleaning, cooking, etc….
Congrats to Arsenal…. May 18, 2006

for being the best losers in the Champions League!
Seriously, it could have been a better game, if not for the referee’s meddling. Had he allowed the goal, gave Lehmann a yellow card, that would have made the match much more exciting. Instead, he nearly ruined the game by with loads of awful decisions to both sides.
Credit to Arse for defending throughout the game, but BARCA IS THE CHAMPIONS!!!!
Ella is now a D-Cup??? May 16, 2006

World Cup odds: revisited May 16, 2006
Posted by kingmeng in Sports.2 comments
With less than 30 days (and my WC-leave planned), it’s about time to re-visit the odds from Singapore Pools:

So what are the odds that have changed?
Brazil (from $3.50 to $3.20)
Considering other betting sites showing odds of up to $3.90, as usual, these odds sucks. If you really wanna grab Brazil, do it now.England (from $7.20 to $8.00)
With Rooney’s injury & Owen yet to complete a full match, coupled with Ericksson’s mystifying squad selection, it’s no wonder the odds went up. Bet at your own risk.Germany (from $7.50 to $6.50)
Odds shorten due to England’s movement, and not because of the optimism of Germany’s chances. Host nations may have won it 6 out of 18 times, but the Germans have yet to defeat a top international side for 5 years.Argentina (from $9.50 to $8.50)
Same case as Germany, though Argentina looks to have a better squad. Then again, they’re in a Group of Death, and the last time they were in one, they lost out to Sweden & England…Italy (from $9.00 to $11.00)
Rocked by betting scandals in the Italian league, could it be a distracting factor for the Azzurri? Only reason I could provide for the lengthening of odds is due to being in the same half as Brazil, and possibly an early meeting in the Round of 16.
There’s plenty of movements from other teams, but I believe that is due to the bookmakers’ adjustments of odds, rather than movement due to huge bets from punters. (Rumours has it that $2000 worth of bets would result in a change in odds.)
.

.
Special bettings have opened today, for punters to bet on the Group winners, & how far your favourite team might advance in the World Cup. Click here for the latest odds.
I shall not be touching on those bets, as I find there isn’t much room for error if you place bets on the favourites. To top the group, the team would have to win 3 successive games in their group (or at least 2 wins & a draw, with a good goal difference).
It is much better to bet on a team getting 3 wins instead of being a Group Winner. Why?
Here’s an example (bear with me, it’s a little mathematical here):
Brazil to top their group: 1.15
You bet $100, you’ll get $115Let’s say Singapore Pools offer 1.05 for a win for all 3 matches (worst odds ever), and if you do compounding bets (aka winnings from 1 match are re-invested into the next match), the total odds would be:
1.05 x 1.05 x 1.05 = 1.157625
You bet $100, you’ll get $115.76
The chances of them offering such low odds are almost zero, so if you want to bet on a sure-Group-Winner, my advice is do compounding bets instead.
Of course, I ain’t no betting guru, so if you really die-die wanna place some money on the dark-horses, here’s some tips:
Sweden @ $3.00: Their weak link is defence, but they’ll be in a group with a Rooney-less England….and England have never defeated Sweden for a long time.
England OUT @ Round of 16 ($3.50)+ Germany OUT @ Round of 16 ($3.00): If you feel that Sweden can top the group (& Germany should top theirs), England will face Germany in Round of 16. One of them WILL BE OUT….hence sit back, and wait to collect your dough.
.
.
Time to save up for World Cup….don’t be too distracted by S.League or Friendlies.
