& I’m off to Bangkok! September 30, 2006

Am I excited about going on my 1st business trip? On the contrary, “indifference” would be the correct word to describe my feeling now.
I can’t pinpoint the exact reason why. Cos I’m still doing work? Cos I’m leaving behind some unfinished business? Cos I’ve been feeling moody for this past week? Cos I have yet to find out whether my insurance cover snake bites on the plane?
*shrugs*
Will be back on Wednesday night. See ya all!

Edit: WordPress.com is getting fucked up. This is the 4th post which my entry was saved instead of published…and I have definately pressed the “Publish” button.
Anyway, shopped like crazy for today….will blog more about it once I get back Singapore!
Little Miss Sunshine September 30, 2006

You know, when you go watch a movie with little fanfare, yet critically acclaimed (93% on RottenTomatoes), 2 things spring into mind:
1) “Oh boy, another arty-farty movie.” (See The Banquet, Lost In Translation)
2) “Wow…the critics are right after all.”
I came out with the latter notion, having watched the Best Comedy….heck, could even be the Best Movie of the Year.
.
This movie focus on a dysfunctional family in America.
There’s Richard (Greg Kinnear), the head of the household that pushes his brand of motivational speaking on anyone & everyone around him, trying to use it as his springboard to greater financial fortune.
There’s Dwayne (Paul Dano), the rebellious teenager who taken a vow of silence, until he fulfil his dreams of being a jet pilot and to be away from his family. (A teenager who hates his family? Sorry, can’t relate to that.)
There’s Grandpa (Alan Arkin), a man who’s seen it all, done it all, is still doing it behind his family’s back, and is not afraid to tell anyone who’s listening – or not – all about it.
There’s Sheryl (Toni Collette), the eye of the hurricane trying to make sure everyone is fed and getting along well.
There’s Uncle Frank (Steve Carell), released back into the world after a suicidal breakdown over the loss of his gay partner, and now just trying to put his rocky past behind him.
And of course, there’s Olive (Abigail Breslin), young enough to still hold onto and cherish her dreams while everyone else in the family is doing their best to hold onto theirs.
In Olive’s case, her dream is to win a beauty pageant that Sheryl’s sister got her involved in, the Little Miss Sunshine pageant in Redondo Beach, California. The only problem is that the Hoovers live in Albuquerque and can’t afford to fly there for the pageant. So the whole family hops into their VW bus and drives from New Mexico to California, everyone sticking together to make sure that at least one member of their family has their dream come true.
.
.
2 things made this movie worked:
1) A great cast that creates wonderful chemistry. Despite having only Steve Carrell considered as a top-billing actor in Hollywood, they mesh so well that a top level cast might not be this good together.
2) The script, which contains a simple story with its complex characters to create an arc that had the audience simultaneously laughing, crying and cheering by its incredibly touching and heart rendering climax.
Really. You won’t regret catching this movie.

What could be worse than having a sprained kneecap?
Having a sprained kneecap, being the only one among my four friends to be down with food poisioning (we ate the same stuff last night) & to find out that my business trip to Bangkok is up in the air after yesterday’s coup.
.
.
Oh well, at least I’ve caught a good movie last night. (And if you’re wondering, yes, I limped my way to Orchard….only to find out the free tickets brought us right at the front row)

10 out of 10 for style & action, but somewhat lacking…can’t pinpoint what was missing though.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Strained my right kneecap during a run 2 weeks ago. Just when I thought it was getting better, I made it worse while walking up a step!
Nope, no MC. Went to see Tie Da (Chinese physician) for the 1st time in my life, and it was pretty painful. At least it’ll be better than waiting for a month, just to get an appointment to see the doctors…
Guess I’ll be busily being a fat slob for the next few weeks. Uurgh…
P.S:

Wu Bai & Zhang Cheng Yue Concert September 5, 2006

Even though I wasn’t a big fan of either singer, but since I’ve managed to find a pair of $80 tickets selling for a total of $70, why not?
Position of my seat from the action….close, eh?
To the surprise of all of us, Zhang Cheng Yue started the concert at 8.15pm, when much of the audience were still finding their seats. (Typical Singaporeans)
He came in without much fanfare…came onto stage, and began his performance. Started off with his less popular songs, which Reddy (my army friend) suggested that it kinda killed off his surprise entrance.
Even with his famous tunes like “爱我别走” & “爱的初体验” only gathered warm applause from the audience. Some artist gather their energy from the fans, so it wasn’t that surprising to see him playing away nonchalantly…
Everything changed when his good friend MC Hotdog came along. You’ll be surprised to see more people standing up & bopping to Mc Hotdog’s music, compared to his more famous buddy.
After belting out 3 of the songs from his album, you know it’s time for their latest hit…
我愛台妹!!!
.
Wu Bai….well, what can you say about him. I reckon 75% of the audience came to see him, judging from the reaction of the crowd. The Emperor of Rock really live up to his title…
.
By the way, we were pleasantly surprised with the sound system. When we went for the Mayday Concert last Nov, it sounded very “open” & their fast songs were horrendous. But WuBai/ChengYue sounded very tight. I guess the sound engineers have learnt from their past experiences in getting the best sound quality for concerts.
Kudos to the sound engineers who prepared for this event. Money-valued concert, with 2 big names for just $35….
Time to search E-bay for Emil Chau!
